While incandescent light bulbs use filaments that heat up to produce light, LED lights (Light Emitting Diode) operate by passing an electric current through a microchip and illuminating tiny “sources” called LEDs. Because of this technology, LED lights use at least 75% less energy and last 15-20 times longer than incandescent lighting. Not only do they need less energy, which means saving money, but it is likely they will last past 15 years on average! LEDs are the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective lighting choice for your home.
There are a number of things you can do to improve your air quality. Opening windows and doors allows fresh air in, increasing oxygen levels and reducing indoor pollutants. Exhaust fans found in your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room are also very useful for circulating air and removing moisture. Additional measures include using an air purifier and dehumidifier to remove small particles like dust and preventing mold and mildew growth. Smoking indoors and the use of harsh cleaning products are also a common source for major indoor air pollution – try to limit these. Plants can also be a great way to improve your indoor air quality! Plants like peace lilies, spider plants, and snake plants are known for their air-purifying qualities – just be cautious of overwatering as this can contribute to mold and mildew growth. And finally – a clean home is a healthy home. Regular vacuuming, sheet washing, and rug cleaning goes a long way for air quality.
Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat allows you to set temperature schedules for specific times of the day. For example, you can program it to warm up your home to 70°F in the morning before you wake up and cool it down to 62°F while you’re at work. The system follows this fixed schedule until you manually adjust it. If your routine changes, you’ll need to reprogram the thermostat to fit your new schedule. In this way, it provides basic control over your home’s temperature but requires manual updates if you want to modify the settings.
Smart Thermostat
A smart thermostat goes beyond basic scheduling by learning your habits and adjusting the temperature automatically based on your routines. For example, it can detect when you leave for work and lower the temperature, then raise it again before you return home. These thermostats can also be controlled remotely through an app on your smartphone, allowing you to adjust the temperature from anywhere, whether you’re at work or on vacation. Many smart thermostats also integrate with voice assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant, giving you hands-free control over your home’s climate. SaveOnEnergy offers the Peak Perks Program, where your thermostat is automatically controlled depending on grid demand and pricing to save you money. You can also receive a free smart thermostat through the Energy Affordability Program.
