Course Description
Ishkoday has developed a professional development tool that can be delivered to professionals in the energy industry. This curriculum will review an understanding of Indigenous perspectives, the history of colonization and the current realities for First Nations when it comes to energy usage including the impacts of access.
Learning Objectives
The objective for this training is to assist energy professionals with understanding the reality of First Nations communities and their needs when partnering with them on energy projects.
Topics will include:
- Bias
- Competing priorities and world views
- Shared values
- Historical timeline and current laws and policies
- How energy poverty affects First Nations
- Planning, strategy and next steps
Learning Outcomes
Participants will learn the following:
- Review the historical timeline of colonization to present for Indigenous persons in Canada and explore how these events and legislation still impact governance and citizenship.
- Wherever possible, participants will be given facts about the access to energy and infrastructure for the customers they work with.
- Look at terminology that pertains to Indigenous peoples.
- Review Energy Poverty.
- Review reasons for meaningful engagement.
- Discuss poverty in First Nations communities including available statistics on housing and energy for Indigenous communities.
